From Wall to Wall - Socfest report on Mediawave Gathering

We continued our trip within and outside the walls of the Fort Monostor. This year's thematic, The Walls was present literally as well: a huge wall was being built, separating east and west. We also watched animations and people dancing on the wall.

As much it is cold outside the fort walls as warm the mood is in the yard. This is the centre of the festival. Here you can find the food stalls, where you can have sausages and special, so far unknown "pillows". As we said earlier, it is a homely festival so we bump into familiar faces. The Gathering is a real child-friendly zone, at the weekend visitors with family can participate in various programs but it is also heaven for dogs who can run free outside.

One of the Mediawave principles is that it doesn't work according to the regular festival form. This is the reson why it calls itself a Gathering and not a festival: the emphasis is on the building power of community. Beside Mediawave celebrates its 25th anniversary and the topic this year is The Walls.

The theme inspired many installations and community programs.  The most prominent one is the wall separating the yard and symbolizing different artists' mindflights. To the latter we also add a piece. Friday evening everyone could make his own box with a hidden message inside. This then could be built into the wall. You did not only build but ate as well: we ate up the fat-bread wall together by the riverside.

You could meet further workshops: the poet club from Győr held spontaneous recitings at different locations of the bastion but there were pantomime performances as well.

Friday we watched Hungarian animations and not surprisingly all seats were occupied. Yes, at this festival the seats are also unique.

This day's film program contained the Oscar-winner Polish masterpiece, Ida, and the winner of the On The Road Online Film Festival, the East Punk Memories as well as the Hungarian Cain's Children and the Corn Island. People visited Iva Bittova's and Ujj Zsuzsi & Kristóf Darvas's performance and had a nice time in the Gyimes-Csángo Dance House.

At night, like a psychcedelic trip, the for walls became light-painted by the Méhkasaula from Székesfehérvár.

Then, on the outer edge of the fortress, we participated the most exciting performance of the day: two circus dancers were dancing the walldance. Tied by a rope, they were spinning, rolling, climbing and mixing acrobatic elements with traditional dance steps.
