István Gaál was a director, whose work was recognized in Italy too. Pier Paolo Pasolini and Bunuel respected him as one of the genius of his age. Besides his several Hungarian prizes, he was awarded an honorary knighthood by Italy in 1999. Gaál had also a lot of personal connections to Rome, since he lived there for years. After graduating from the Filmacademy in Budapest, he got a scholarship to Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografiába (the centre of experimental filmmaking) in Rome. He worked as a reader in the Film College in Rome from the end of the 1970’s to the beginning of the 1980’s. His photos made with his filmmaker eyes are mainly of Rome. Not only the historical places, but also the everyday life of it: the quiet streets, squares, alleys, and the citizens sitting and reading lonely in the scene of Rome, the Eternal City.
The MEDIAWAVE Festival - with the centre of Győr - as a regional organisation has taken place in 20 cities of 4 countries – the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary – for many years by now with ever expanding venues. In the past 3 years the partner organisations of the MEDIAWAVE Foundation has been launched in Győr in the framework of the MEDIAWAVE International Partner Conference on the first day of the festival. Please see the programs in other Hungarian cities and the international program as well.
The meeting helps Central European music festivals, clubs and their organizers establish links so that Central and Eastern Europe becomes open field where art and artists are indeed free to move around – and not only on paper or at the level of slogans. Let’s pay attention to our neighbors’ culture and we hope that they also pay attention to ours.

This is the name of a record label which straight away brings to mind the musicians which it features. The leading lights of Great Black Music recorded their music for posterity on this Italian label, whose studios were in Milan. Black Saint is a label which is familiar to fans of an open-ended sort of jazz, which runs through all the colours from green to orange via blue.
Since 1991, at the opening ceremony of the MEDIAWAVE Festival, the "Parallel Culture” award has been given to artists from Hungary and artists who have performed in Hungary whose art and civilian or independent intellectual life have not conformed to any current or fashionable artistic trend and who were able to follow their inner voice that led to unbeaten paths.
