For the last days of February, the pre-jury of the "Fényírók Fesztiválja - Another Connection" - 32nd Mediawave 2022 Gathering selected the international film program for the festival, from nearly 900 films. The members of the pre-jury can be accessed by clicking here. Based on last year's attempt, the judging of the movies that have entered the international film competition will not be performed by reputed experts, but - in the spirit of the Gathering’s new concept - by Hungarian and international students from different film universities. The only exceptions are the music and environmentally conscious documentaries, as they will be judged by a separate professional jury. We want to emphasise that it is not a student jury, but a new concept that aims to help youth training in the field of moving pictures. After all, not only first year students, but also practicing filmmakers and theoreticians in their master's and postgraduate education are among the jury members. According to the words of film director and actor András Szőke, inspired by the example of the "conscious customer", we intended to help the formation of the "conscious (film)viewer" layer.

The pandemic had a huge damaging effect on all our everyday lives, and that is also true for the life of the organiser group members.. For this reason, our fresh, young, evolving organiser groups decided to create a new beginning. We look back at the past 30 years, as an accomplished time period, acknowledging all its values and failures. After the last year, which was hugely impacted by the pandemic situation, we are trying to reinterpret the acquired virtues of Mediawave.
Because of that, there will be new directions, but we also intend to keep and to carry on the old atmosphere and spirit.

Firstly, the “togetherness” of the Movie Festival part should be reconceived, with a newly invented shape, style and emphasis, because the previous organiser generation had less impact on adapting it to the contemporary times. In the past ten years, the strength of other artistic events (like music and all-arts programs) were building up a community spirit, and had huge success in creating a unique and special atmosphere in the events that were organised in the monastery fortress (in Komárom).

We have achieved that we were not willing to wait and serve the ones who come, and to fulfil the desires of the people, but instead we wanted to integrate everyone to create a community, collaborating and building up our “togetherness” together.

While the young organiser group has fewer experiences, it can happen that they make some mistakes.

MEDIAWAVE started the On the Road Online Festival 7 years ago to extend the availability of the type of films we prefer. The online competition is normally different from the classic film competition but this year, exceptionally, we have only an online one. The reason is that we are celebrating our 30th anniversary and we decided to screen selections from the past three decades.

The films of the online competition will be awarded by a jury in three different categories and there is an audiance prize, too. We'll screen the awarded films at the Mediawave Film and Music Gathering between 28 April and 2 May.

The films are available online until 27 April, 2020.

It was time to update our old static web cover directed visitors to different websites of our activities.

We tried to create a portal including more, constantly updated news, links to find actual programs quickly and some older yet exciting events. Hopefully it will meet the needs for those who want quick and fresh information and at the same time it can be a useful platform to search in the complex website including two film and photo archives plus a web tv.

We would be glad to get feedbacks from you not only about nice things but also the arising mistakes and faults.

Please, note that our past is far for being fully processed. We've been working on it as much as possible.

2020 TROUBADOURS

2020 Troubadours is a cultural project in the roam of the Creative Europe-program of the EU. The project is run by cultural non-profit organizations from Belgium, France, Serbia, Hungary and Ukraine. Our main objective is to improve the transnational mobility of some world music artists coming from those regions, by setting up a serie of ‘Trouba Labs’ (concerts/workshops) and ‘Trouba Train Trips’.

These days, Europe is confronted with a huge identity crisis: the ‘old’ Europe tries to give answers to a changing society, to migration, to candidate member states which want to be part of the European dream... Although European world music is a keystone and a story teller of our extraordinary European past, people are no longer aware of this. Our project wants to show the possibilities of European world music in order to bring people together, to stimulate the cultural dialogue and to show that European cultural co-operation is a solid way to counter discrimination and to heal post-war traumas....

Just touring and playing music? No! #2020Troubadours also wants to stimulate the discussion between artists and the audience about the identity crisis the EU is faced with... Because European world music tells us so much about the fascinating ‘human history’ of Europe: our world music is a vivid exponent of regional cultural traditions. Popular world music helped people surviving everywhere in Europe in times of difficult personal or political situations, such as crises, wars, occupations, etc. Unfortunately, it is still like that today.

The first station of the project is at Mediawave. On the 1st of May, the participant musicians present themselves. Next day, in the nature, the closing concert of the cooperaion will take place.

You can watch films for free in different topics and genres until our standard film festival (29 April). Click here for the movies and vote! Beside the audience, a professional jury is also judging the films. Hereby we inform the film makers and film lovers that the selection of the tremendous number of film submissions (4314 from 117 countries) is completed. The program will be published soon.

We received unusually big number of submissions for the 2019 competition. In the previous years, the film makers of the world sent average 1000 entries from 80-90 countries. It happened only once in the Mediawave history that the number of submissions reached 1800, causing pretty much work to deal with. This year it is twice as big task as it was, however our film staff has been intensively working on handling, displaying and selecting the thousands of entries. (details in "see more").

We gladly recommend you to search the program of the Mediawave Gathering and make plans so you ca actively participate at the end-of-April long weekend (5 days). The music program is almost complete and the film program will soon be available. The film program was selected by international selection teams and currently we are scheduling the programs.  This year for the first time we attempt to create the community cinema experience with involvement of film makers, juries, student juries and visitors as a combination of classical and new trends of social screenings. We are happy to invite you for those events and feel free to get informed. You can also have an idea about the structure here.

You can also reach the afternoon programs - Riverside picnic as well as the community programs, however you can submit with your community projects until the last moment.

This year we offer programs for families with kids, too.

We have had an effective cooperation with Miki since 2010. First we involved him into our roma-Hungarian music workshops and then we travelled around the minority-inhabited areas of Inner South China searching for musicians to bring them to Hungary. We helped his unique music collector activity in Transylvania last year. In our summer camps, he goes collecting music with young people to the gipsy villages of Somogy County. We are proud that he was awarded the Gold Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit last week.
